Harris County Invites the Community to “Turn Over A New Leaf” at Fall Compost & Electronics Recycling Events

Download the press release (Harris County, TX) – November 5, 2025 — This autumn, the Harris County community is invited to “turn over a new leaf” at a series of fun, hands-on sustainability events across Houston.

The Community Compost and Electronics Recycling Drop-Off Pilot Program, running October 29 through November 25, 2025, offers residents and employees the opportunity to learn, engage, and make a lasting impact on the environment.

In collaboration with the Harris County Public Library, Moonshot Compost, Zero Waste Houston, and the Houston Zoo, the Harris County Office of County Administration’s Sustainability Division is hosting 12 drop-off events across four library locations. Participants can bring food scraps for composting and small handheld electronics for responsible recycling, helping transform everyday waste into valuable community resources and diverting them from our local landfills.

“Composting and electronics recycling are simple, impactful ways to reduce our environmental footprint,” said Lisa Lin, Director of the Office of Sustainability, OCA.  “These events make it easy for residents and employees to participate in meaningful sustainability efforts right where they live and work.”

Edward Melton, Executive Director for the Harris County Public Library, added, “Libraries are built on the idea of sustainability—sharing resources rather than consuming more. Through this partnership with OCA and these local organizations, we are helping our communities take small actions that have a lasting impact right here in Harris County and for the planet as a whole.”

The program aims to foster awareness, education, and engagement around sustainability practices while creating opportunities for residents to connect with local environmental partners. Attendees can expect to learn how they can contribute to creating healthy soils, reducing toxics in our landfills, and being part of a growing culture of environmental stewardship within Harris County.
