Expanding Access to Healthy Food: Harris Health Unveils New Food LockersOn March 24, 2026, Harris Health System marked an exciting milestone in itsmission to address food insecurity by unveiling new Food Lockers at the QuentinMease Health Center. This innovative program is designed to better supportpatients facing nutritional challenges by expanding access to fresh, healthy food.Through the Food Locker program, eligible patients can receive up to 30 pounds of fresh produce every two weeks. The lockers allow patients to conveniently pick up their food on their own schedule, increasing flexibility and making it easier to access nutritious options when they need them most.

Building on the Food Farmacy Foundation

This new effort builds on the success of the Harris Health Food Farmacy program, funded partly through the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA). Since December 2023, the ARPA team has proudly supported this initiative, which focuses on addressing health-related social needs such as food insecurity, limited nutritional knowledge, and lack of access to culinary education. Challenges that disproportionately impact vulnerable communities across Harris County.

The Food Farmacy program takes a comprehensive, patient-centered approach. Individuals who screen positive for food insecurity are connected with a community health worker, guided by a dietitian to select healthy foods, and linked to a Houston Food Bank navigator for benefits enrollment. Patients are also connected to additional community food resources, ensuring ongoing support beyond the clinic.

Expanding Reach Across Harris County

ARPA funding has enabled the Food Farmacy program to grow significantly, supporting patients at multiple locations, including:
• Martin Luther King Jr. Health Center
• Gulfgate Health Center
• El Franco Lee Health Center

In May 2024, the Harris County Commissioners Court approved ARPA-funded support to be extended to two community redemption sites. This allows patients to access services at:
• Harris Health Cypress Health Center in partnership with Cypress Assistance Ministries
• Harris Health Squatty Lyons Health Center in partnership with Humble Area Assistance Ministries

Measurable Impact

The results of this investment have been substantial. To date, ARPA funding has supported:
• 7,483 patients served across ARPA-funded Food Farmacy and community redemption sites
• 357,000 pounds of fresh food distributed to Harris County residents These numbers represent more than just meals. They reflect improved health outcomes, stronger community connections, and meaningful progress in addressing food insecurity.

“This is a great thing for the community! I have been a part of Gulfgate Harris Health for 20 years now, I grew up in this neighborhood and the assistance is so important out here. I have the privilege of being the first walk-in patient of Gulfgate Food Farmacy and I’m leaving with a full heart.” - FoodRx Patient served at the Gulfgate Food Farmacy.
