The Little Composter Who Inspired Big Change

Our Sustainability Team recently partnered with the Harris County Public Library, Moonshot Compost, and Zero Waste Houston Compost to host community drop-off locations for food-waste composting. The event was held in the fall, with over 10 dates across the county at various library branches. The team accepted various food waste items to promote composting in the community.

We wanted to share a sweet story that happened at our North Channel Library drop-off location! A family stopped by because their young son wanted to drop off their food waste. Afterwards, they headed to their neighborhood Lowe’s to buy a bigger bucket to collect their food scraps, and the customer service manager was so touched by their story that he drove over to the library to ask how Lowe’s could help.

A little while later, Lowe’s returned with a whole stack of buckets to give out to residents so that they could participate more easily for the next compost drop-off event! All because of one kid’s enthusiasm for doing the right thing. And the best part? That same kid went home, grabbed his aunt’s food scraps, and came back to drop off again that morning.

A huge thank you to this awesome family, Moonshot Compost, Harris County Public Library, and Lowe's for being so generous and donating buckets! Small actions can truly create BIG impacts.
